Lyndsay Newett is a PhD candidate at the University of Tasmania and she surveyed Tinder users and interviewed 11 people aged 18 to 30 to explore how Dating website tasmania used and viewed the app. Promoted as a dating and social connection service, for many people the perception is Tinder is all about casual sex.

While sex was a motivating factor for many of the users, particularly males, Ms Newett found it did not always go how they would have liked. While the men in Dating website tasmania Newett's study were not totally satisfied, the women she spoke to were having a better time. Ms Newett said her research found women felt more in control of interactions through Dating website tasmania than if they met someone by chance.

While some users are using Tinder to find casual sex, Ms Newett said there was less hooking up in Hobart than in larger cities like Sydney. Ms Newett said finding someone on Tinder you already knew was mostly a positive thing for those surveyed, as it gave them a way of initiating contact in a way they might not be brave enough to do face to face.
